Engineer Head of Engineering, Rewards at Moniepoint Group

Lead and scale the rewards platform engineering team, overseeing cashback and retention product development across millions of users.

What this role involves

Who we are

Moniepoint Inc. is Africa’s all-in-one financial platform, helping 20 million businesses and individuals access seamless payments, banking, credit, cross-border, and business management tools each month.

As Nigeria’s largest merchant acquirer, we power most of the country’s point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Through our subsidiaries, Moniepoint Inc. processes over $250 billion in digital payment transaction value annually.

Why Poland

Poland is a new and deliberate addition to our engineering map. We recently made our first technology hire in the country, and we see it as a long-term strategic location for senior hires, particularly within engineering. Joining now means joining early, and helping shape what our presence here becomes.

So, now we are looking for our Head of Engineering, Rewards to join us in Poland.

About The Role

Rewards is one of the most strategically important platforms at Moniepoint, and it is being built into a dedicated charter with its own engineering and product leadership. The platform sits at the centre of our retention strategy across a user base of approximately 23 million people.

Today the platform does one thing: cashback. It works, but it has barely scratched the surface of what rewards can be, and the cashback product itself is not yet built to the depth it deserves. The ambition is to evolve it into a full rewards, retention, engagement and personalisation platform — and to do that across the full 360 degrees of our network. That means rewards for our business customers, rewards for our consumer customers, and rewards for the sales agents who drive our distribution. Very few companies get to design this from close to a blank page at this scale.

The Head of Engineering owns that platform end to end. You will inherit a team of nine engineers, including an Engineering Manager, and build the organisation out from there — the current expectation is a minimum of three product units and upwards of 25 people, though the eventual shape is genuinely yours to define. Your first objective is to get the best possible performance out of the cashback product we already have. From there, you will work with Growth, Sales and Marketing to determine what we build for acquisition and retention, and roll it out across every customer we serve.

This is a consumer-facing product engineering role, and that is the most important thing to understand about it. Rewards is won or lost on experimentation, personalisation, and the quality of the experience in a customer’s hands. We are looking for a leader who has built and shipped direct-to-consumer products at scale, who is fluent in experimentation and A/B testing, and who has real depth in front-end and mobile engineering — not a purely backend platform leader.

Moniepoint runs a Domain CTO model. We view our Heads of Engineering as the CTO of their domain: you own the technical roadmap, the architecture, the delivery, and the organisation beneath you. You will have full autonomy over engineering strategy, architecture, hiring, operating cadence and roadmap trade-offs.

You will report functionally to our Group CTO, with a dual reporting line into the Product leader for Rewards. That second line is a delivery relationship rather than a seniority one — engineering and product are peers here, and you will build the team to full capacity together. Your responsibilities as Head of Engineering, Rewards includes:

  • Owning the technical strategy, architecture and roadmap for the Rewards Platform end to end.
  • Improving the performance, reliability and depth of the existing cashback product as an immediate first priority.
  • Evolving cashback into a broader rewards, retention, engagement and personalisation platform serving business customers, consumer customers and sales agents.
  • Building the engineering organisation from its current base - structuring product units, hiring engineers and Engineering Managers, and leading through those managers as the team scales.
  • Establishing a strong experimentation culture: A/B testing, cohort analysis, and measurement that lets the team learn quickly what actually changes customer behaviour.
  • Working closely with Growth, Sales and Marketing to translate acquisition and retention objectives into product and engineering initiatives.
  • Owning the customer-facing experience of rewards across mobile and web, including how quickly and reliably customers receive what they have earned.
  • Define architecture standards, engineering processes and quality metrics, and own the engineering health of the domain — incidents, production defects, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and developer experience.
  • Build the platform to serve customers across multiple geographies as Moniepoint expands.
  • Partner with Product to define the rewards-specific metrics and OKRs that do not yet exist, and hold the team to them.

Who You Are

  • Direct-to-consumer product engineering at scale. You have built and shipped products used directly by large consumer audiences, and you understand what moves engagement and retention. This is the defining requirement of the role.
  • Genuine front-end and mobile depth. You have led or personally built consumer-facing mobile and web experiences. A backend-only background, however strong, is not what this role needs.
  • Experimentation and growth engineering. Hands-on experience running A/B tests, feature flagging, and measurement frameworks, and using the results to drive product decisions rather than to justify them.
  • At least 5 years of experience managing managers — leading an engineering organisation through other engineering leaders, not a single team.
  • Hands-on technical leadership. You are still close to the code. We expect a meaningful proportion of hands-on engineering time and technical credibility with the engineers you lead.
  • 10+ years of overall software engineering experience, with at least 5 years leading engineering teams through growth phases.
  • Comfort with our backend environment — Java and Spring Boot — and the ability to lead backend engineers credibly, even if it is not where your own depth sits.
  • Experience building and scaling an engineering organisation from a small base, including hiring and developing Engineering Managers.
  • Strong collaboration with commercial stakeholders — growth, marketing and sales — and the ability to translate business objectives into engineering work.
  • Rewards, loyalty, gamification, personalisation or growth platform experience is a strong advantage but is not required.
  • Fintech or payments experience is an advantage, not a requirement.

Cultural Alignment

As well, we assess every candidate across eight dimensions that define how great leaders operate at Moniepoint. We look for evidence of all eight throughout the process, not just in a single conversation.

  • Customer Obsession: Build deep empathy for users. Solve problems intuitively, and fix root causes, not just tickets.
  • Craft: Master the fundamentals. Reason from first principles, make trade-offs explicit, and raise the bar on quality.
  • Systemisation: Turn repeating decisions into scalable mechanisms. Reduce cognitive load and raise engineering quality.
  • Urgency: Move with disciplined speed. Act autonomously within scope, remove friction, and escalate risks early.
  • Ownership: Treat the platform as your own. Take initiative across boundaries and follow through without reminders.
  • No Ego: Put the mission first. Share credit, welcome debate, and never protect status over team outcomes.
  • Candour: Surface uncomfortable truths and risks early. Intelligent failure is welcome; concealment is not.
  • Integrity: Stay truthful and ethically consistent. Refuse toxic behavior. Performance without integrity is unacceptable.

What Success Looks Like In The Role

  • The existing cashback product performing measurably better — faster, more reliable, and more compelling to customers.
  • A credible rewards platform roadmap defined with Product, and the first initiatives beyond cashback shipped.
  • A functioning experimentation practice, where the team ships, measures and learns on a short cycle.
  • An engineering organisation built out from its current base, with a strong bench of Engineering Managers and senior engineers.
  • Rewards established as a measurable contributor to retention and engagement across the customer base.
  • Clear architecture standards and engineering processes in place across the product units.

Why Join Us

  • A rare blank page. The platform exists, but almost everything it could become is still ahead of it, and you will define what that is.
  • Direct influence on retention across a base of roughly 23 million users, at one of the largest and fastest-growing digital banks in Africa.
  • Full autonomy as the CTO of your domain, with the backing to build the organisation you think the problem needs.
  • Be part of a mission-driven company expanding access to financial services for millions of businesses and individuals.

What To Expect In The Hiring Process

  • 60 minute High level System Design round with one of our Engineering Managers.
  • 60 minute Panel Interview with 2 of our Head of Engineering leaders. 30 minutes focused on a technical deep dive into your CV and into a project or system you built in the past. 30 minutes focused on testing for leadership attributes.
  • 60 minute Stakeholder Management Round with one of our Product Heads/VPs, focused on your stakeholder management and collaboration skills with product and business.
  • 60 minute Technical round and Culture fit interview with our Co-founder & Group CTO (the hiring manager).

Moniepoint is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and candidates.

Engineer Head of Engineering, Sales & Marketing Tools at Moniepoint Group

Leads engineering team building and maintaining internal sales/marketing operations platform (MonieCRM) and martech stack for 50,000-person field sales network across Africa.

Why Kenya

Kenya is where our next chapter begins. Following our acquisition of Sumac Microfinance Bank, we’re preparing to go live — which means the people we hire here help build a business from its first day, not inherit one. How we execute in Kenya will shape how we approach every market we enter after it, making this one of the most consequential engineering mandates in the business right now. This is the natural extension of our mission: to drive financial inclusion, and help millions of business owners and individuals across the African continent achieve financial happiness and success.

So, now we are looking for our Head of Engineering, Sales & Marketing Tools, to join us in Kenya.

About The Role

Sales and Marketing Tools owns MonieCRM, the operating system for Moniepoint’s 50,000-strong sales network. This is not a CRM we bought — it is a workforce operations platform built entirely in-house for a multi-level field sales hierarchy, and it is how those teams run their day to day: the portfolio of businesses they manage, their own teams, their goals and performance, the physical and digital resources they need in the field, and an emerging AI-assisted support layer. Sixteen capabilities span onboarding and network management, pipeline and portfolio, performance and goals, compensation, and sales experience and support.

A significant part of the domain moves money. The platform owns wallets, commission calculation and attribution, cashout and welfare funds for a network that drives the overwhelming majority of company revenue — which makes financial correctness, not just availability, a core engineering requirement of the role.

Alongside that, the domain covers partner management, a rewards and retention platform serving tens of millions of users, and our marketing technology stack, including the engineering and customisation of Braze, the platform we use for customer engagement. The mandate is modernisation and reliability: re-architecting systems that have grown very quickly and making them dependable at a scale of more than 20 million users. This is a platform engineering and legacy modernisation challenge first and foremost, and prior CRM or SalesTech experience is genuinely not required.

Who You Are

  • You have 10–15 years of overall software engineering experience, with at least 5 years leading engineering teams through growth phases.
  • 5+ years of hands-on, production-level experience writing and shipping Java code as a practising engineer. This means years spent writing Java yourself, not years spent overseeing teams who write it.
  • At least 5 years of experience managing managers — leading an engineering organisation through other engineering leaders, rather than running a single team.
  • You have proven platform engineering experience at scale — building and running complex distributed systems, not feature delivery alone.
  • You have navigated legacy migrations and re-architecture projects at 20M+ user scale.
  • You have strong backend engineering skills in high-throughput, data-intensive distributed systems, and are proficient in Java and Spring Boot.
  • You have managed and developed large engineering teams of 20 or more members.
  • Experience building systems where financial correctness matters — commissions, payouts, wallets, ledgers or equivalent — is a strong advantage.
  • A fintech or payments background is strongly preferred. CRM or SalesTech domain experience is nice to have and explicitly not required.
  • Exposure to customer engagement or marketing automation platforms such as Braze is a plus, but not a requirement.

  • Legacy systems modernised and re-architected, with measurable improvement in reliability and performance.
  • Commissions and earnings calculated, attributed and paid accurately and on time, at network scale.
  • A sales and marketing platform that scales with a rapidly growing agent network across multiple markets.
  • Commercial teams able to move faster because the tooling beneath them is dependable.
  • A high-performing engineering team with a strong bench of managers and senior engineers.

Why Join Us

  • Own the platform behind the commercial engine of one of Africa’s largest digital banks — the system 50,000 people rely on to do their jobs and to get paid.
  • A genuine platform modernisation mandate with the autonomy and backing to see it through.
  • Be part of a mission-driven company impacting millions of businesses and individuals across Africa and beyond.

What this role involves

About Us

At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company.

At Cloudflare, we’re not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; we’re looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a “normalized” problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in.

Location: Austin, TX (US)

Cloudflare’s Infrastructure Team builds and runs the systems and software that support our solutions that handle trillions of requests per month. We ensure that all of the new and existing features and functionality that Cloudflare offers can be managed at scale and meet the needs of our massively growing, global customer base.

About the role

As a Senior Software Engineer in the Deploy@Scale team, you will provide technical leadership for the platform that powers safe, reliable, and automated deployments across Cloudflare. This is a senior IC role: you will set technical direction across multiple work streams, not just execute within one.

You’ll be expected to operate with significant autonomy - identifying the right problems to solve, driving architecture decisions that will hold up over multiple years, and influencing how dozens of engineering teams across Cloudflare think about safe change. You will partner directly with your EM and leadership to shape the multi-quarter roadmap, and you’ll be a primary technical voice in cross-team design reviews, RFCs, and incident retrospectives that touch deployment safety.

You’ll spend meaningful time unblocking and elevating the rest of the team: reviewing designs before they become code, pairing on the hardest problems, and raising the technical bar through mentorship - without needing to be a people manager to do it. You’ll be defining what the platform is, deciding what not to build, and making the tradeoffs which ensure the system is safe, fast, and scalable five years from now.

Where we’re heading

  • From human-in-the-loop to machine-in-the-loop: fully automated, health-mediated deployments as the default, at hundreds of thousands of releases a day.
  • Consolidating a fragmented landscape: unifying release orchestration, health mediation, feature flagging, and configuration rollback into one coherent platform.
  • AI as a first-class part of the platform: you’ll help define where and how AI assists both the platform and the humans operating it.

This is a unique opportunity to work on complex, globally distributed systems that underpin every Cloudflare product. You will play a key role in advancing the infrastructure that enables fast, safe delivery of changes to production, directly impacting the reliability and velocity of Cloudflare’s global network. You will collaborate with the team to understand business needs and develop technical solutions, working closely with internal customers to turn their workflows into platform capabilities. You will thrive in a fast-paced iterative engineering environment with short release cycles.

This role may require flexibility to be on-call outside of standard working hours to address technical issues as needed.

Examples of desirable skills, knowledge, and experience

  • 8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, including a track record of owning the architecture of complex, distributed, production-critical systems end to end.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership beyond your own code: driving RFCs and design reviews that other senior engineers and teams rely on, and being sought out as a technical escalation point.
  • Judgment for ambiguity — comfortable defining the problem and the roadmap, not just the solution, in an environment where requirements are not fully specified upfront.
  • Deep experience with safety, observability, and automation in production systems: designing rollback paths, health signals, and guardrails that other systems and teams build on top of.
  • Experience influencing technical direction across team boundaries — through architecture, mentorship, or platform APIs/contracts — without direct authority.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment with AI as a working tool: fluent use of AI-assisted development, critical evaluation of its output, and a point of view on where it should and shouldn’t be trusted in a safety-critical system.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration, long-running/durable execution, or large-scale distributed systems is a strong plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication — this role requires writing docs and RFCs that persuade and align, not just describe.

Bonus points

  • Prior experience owning a deployment, progressive delivery, or change-management platform at scale.
  • Experience leading a technical migration across many independent teams (e.g., a platform sunset/replacement).

Equity

This role is eligible to participate in Cloudflare’s equity plan.

Engineer Head of Engineering, Sales & Marketing Tools at Moniepoint Group

Leads engineering team building and modernizing internal sales/marketing tools and financial platforms serving millions of users across a fintech organization.

Lead Onsite Posted 1 day ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Who we are

Moniepoint Inc. is Africa’s all-in-one financial platform, helping 20 million businesses and individuals access seamless payments, banking, credit, cross-border, and business management tools each month.

As Nigeria’s largest merchant acquirer, we power most of the country’s point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Through our subsidiaries, Moniepoint Inc. processes over $250 billion in digital payment transaction value annually.

Why Poland

Poland is a new and deliberate addition to our engineering map. We recently made our first technology hire in the country, and we are looking at Poland as a long-term strategic location for senior hires, particularly within our engineering organisation. Joining now means joining early, and helping shape what our presence here becomes.

So, now we are looking for our Head of Engineering, Sales & Marketing Tools, to join us in Poland.

Engineer Head of Engineering, Field Verification at Moniepoint Group

Head of Engineering leads a lean cross-functional squad building and scaling Moniepoint's field verification platform for KYC and compliance across Africa.

So, now we are looking for our Head of Engineering, Field Verification to join us in Poland.

About the role

Field Verification is how Moniepoint knows that the people and businesses on our platform are real. Every Moniepoint customer, retail and business, requires a completed field verification as part of KYC. The platform coordinates physical, in-person checks — verifying individuals, business owners, business addresses and loan guarantors — and it serves nearly every part of the company: onboarding, loans, compliance and the fraud team.

The system works today. A back office gives each business unit visibility and control over its own verification requests. A mobile-friendly web app puts the work in the hands of Field Verification Officers and the cluster leads who manage them across local government areas. An API layer lets other business units push verification requests in and receive results back by webhook, and an assignment algorithm routes each request to an officer close enough to carry it out.

We want to be straightforward about the rest. This domain has never had a dedicated engineering leader, and that is the single biggest constraint on it. The team is one lean, cross-functional squad — an Engineering Manager, four engineers and a QA — carrying verification volume for the entire customer base. They have done that impressively well, but running lean means running in keep-the-lights-on mode, and a long list of things that would make this platform substantially better has been waiting for someone to own it.

That list is the role. Trip and route management, so an officer can plan an optimal day across several sites rather than making a separate journey for each one — today we pay for a round trip per verification, and the logistics are nowhere near optimal. Capacity management. A native mobile app, wanted for a long time and never resourced. Liveness and identity verification tooling, exposed as APIs the rest of the business can build on. And as Moniepoint expands into markets where identity verification is as difficult as it is in Nigeria, Kenya among them, a platform that works beyond a single country.

There is a great deal of room to build here. Whoever takes this on will set the direction rather than inherit someone else’s plan, on a system that already carries real weight for the business.

As Head of Engineering, Field Verification, your responsibilities will include:

  • Owning the technical strategy, architecture and roadmap for the Field Verification platform end to end, and setting direction for a domain that has been running without dedicated engineering leadership.
  • Moving the platform from keep-the-lights-on operation to deliberate, prioritised development.
  • Leading and growing the existing cross-functional team, and building the organisation out as scope expands.
  • Building the operational efficiency layer — trip and route optimisation, task allocation and capacity management for field officers.
  • Owning the platform’s client-facing surface: the APIs and webhooks that other business units integrate with, and the back office those units rely on.
  • Delivering a native mobile experience for field officers.
  • Ensuring verification data is structured, auditable and fit for compliance scrutiny.
  • Building for multi-country expansion as Moniepoint enters new markets.
  • Partnering closely with Product and with the business units that depend on the platform — onboarding, loans, compliance and fraud.
  • Defining architecture standards, engineering processes and quality metrics, and hiring and developing engineers and Engineering Managers.

Who you are

  • You have built things yourself, and grew into leadership from there. We are explicit about this: we are not looking for someone who moved into management early and has led from a distance since. We want an engineer who became a leader.
  • You are capable across disciplines. Backend, web and mobile. This platform spans all three and you will need credibility in each — a specialist in one layer will struggle here.
  • You have built platforms, not just products . Systems used by several distinct groups of users and internal business units, with the flexibility to serve requirements you did not anticipate.
  • You are a problem solver first. We would rather have someone adaptable than someone with the exact domain experience. Having built across different industries — fintech, e-commerce, logistics or otherwise — is a positive signal, not a scattered CV.
  • You have 10+ years of overall software engineering experience, with substantial hands-on production engineering and strong backend depth. Our backend environment is Java and Spring Boot.
  • You have at least 5 years of engineering leadership, including managing Engineering Managers.
  • You collaborate well with product and business stakeholders, and can translate operational requirements into engineering solutions.
  • Experience working with location and geospatial data is a strong plus, including map integrations.
  • Experience with route, trip or delivery optimisation is a strong plus.
  • Experience building for compliance — where data must be structured to evidence what was done and when — is a strong plus.
  • Experience with identity, KYC or verification platforms is a plus. None of these four are requirements.

Engineer Head of Engineering, Payment Gateway at Moniepoint Group

Leads multiple engineering teams to build and scale a payment gateway platform, owning technical strategy, architecture, developer experience, and platform reliability.

Lead Onsite Posted 3 days ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Who We Are

Moniepoint Inc. is Africa’s all-in-one financial platform, helping 20 million businesses and individuals access seamless payments, banking, credit, cross-border, and business management tools each month.

As Nigeria’s largest merchant acquirer, we power most of the country’s point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Through our subsidiaries, Moniepoint Inc. processes over $250 billion in digital payment transaction value annually.

Why United Kingdom

The UK is home to our headquarters where more than 70 team members are based. Our London office is located at Sea Containers, just by London Bridge - this is also where a significant number of our most senior leaders sit, which makes it a natural base for a Head of Engineering.

So, now we are looking for our Head of Engineering, Payment Gateway to join us in the UK.

About The Role

Monnify is Moniepoint’s online payment acceptance platform: the gateway layer connecting merchants to card networks, banks and payment aggregators, and the tools that let businesses and developers accept and send money digitally. The division owns transaction reliability, routing and throughput at scale, together with the developer experience that sits on top of it - APIs, SDKs, documentation and ease of integration. Built first for Nigerian businesses and developers, the platform is now scaling internationally and moving towards multi-currency, multi-market support.

The Head of Engineering owns the technical direction and architecture of that platform, ensuring scalability, security and developer experience for both technical and non-technical users. The role involves leading multiple engineering teams through their managers, setting strategic architecture, and ensuring platform reliability, security and scalability across Payment In, Payout, Commerce Tools and developer-facing features. As the Head of Engineering, Payment Gateway, your responsibilities will include:

  • Own the full technical strategy, architecture and roadmap for the Monnify platform across all capability areas.
  • Lead multiple engineering teams through engineering managers, setting quality standards and building organisational capability.
  • Own the developer experience end-to-end, including APIs, documentation, SDKs and integration ease.
  • Drive platform evolution towards multi-currency and international scalability.
  • Ensure platform reliability, scalability and security within a regulated environment.
  • Partner with product, commercial and operations teams to align technical investments with business goals.
  • Hire, mentor and develop engineering managers and senior engineers to support growth.

Who You Are

  • Over 10 years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in engineering leadership roles.
  • 5+ years of hands-on, production-level experience writing and shipping Java code as a practising engineer. This means years spent writing Java yourself, not only years spent overseeing teams who write it.
  • At least 5 years of experience managing managers - leading an engineering organisation through other engineering leaders, rather than running a single team.
  • Experience in payments, fintech or financial services products, with a working understanding of payment flows and compliance.
  • Deep knowledge of API-first products, developer platforms and API integration.
  • Proven leadership of multiple engineering teams via managers in a scaling organisation.
  • Strong backend engineering skills in high-throughput, distributed transactional systems.
  • Experience building or operating a payment gateway or multi-currency payment platform is a strong plus.

  • Integrity: Stay truthful and ethically consistent. Refuse toxic behavior. Performance without integrity is unacceptable.

What To Expect In The Hiring Process

  • A preliminary phone call with the recruiter
  • A Panel interview session with two of our VPs of Engineering
  • A Technical Assessment with our Group CTO / Co-founder
  • A Behavioral and technical interview with our Group CEO / Founder
  • Technical Workshop with our Group CTO / Co-founder

Some of the technologies you’ll get to work with

  • Java (latest versions)
  • Spring and Spring Boot
  • Docker and Kubernetes
  • PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Elastic search
  • Microservices architecture on AWS

What we can offer you

  • Own the payments infrastructure that thousands of businesses and developers build on, at a company processing hundreds of billions of dollars in transaction volume annually.

Engineer Head of Engineering, POS Application Platform at Moniepoint Group

Head of Engineering leads the POS Application Platform team, owning the Kotlin-based foundational engineering layer and architecture standards for all POS products across multiple markets.

So, now we are looking for our Head of Engineering, POS Apps to join us in the UK.

About the role

More than 6 million businesses run their financial lives through Moniepoint - and the primary way they interact with us every single day is through a POS device. For most of our merchants, that device is their business. It is how they accept payments, how they access credit, and how they track their finances. Everything those devices are capable of, in terms of speed, reliability, and developer quality, flows from the engineering platform this role leads.

We are building a dedicated POS Application Platform function: the foundational Kotlin-based engineering layer that sits beneath every POS product at Moniepoint. Think of it as the operating system for our POS engineering organisation - the standards, frameworks, tooling, and architectural backbone that every POS engineer across the business builds on top of. This is not a feature team. It is a platform team in the truest sense, and the Head of Engineering for POS Application Platform is the technical owner of that layer.

We currently operate across five POS device types from multiple OEM manufacturers, all running on Android. The engineering challenges here span device governance, developer experience, platform reliability, foundational frameworks, and adoption across a distributed set of POS engineers working in separate product squads.

And the scope is growing. We have a UK entity live, a cross-border payments product in market, and a microfinance bank acquisition which just finalized in Kenya. The platform you build will become the foundation for tens of millions of businesses across multiple markets to accept payments, access financial services, and grow. If you have spent your career going deep on POS systems and you want to build the platform that underpins one of Africa’s most consequential fintech businesses during its expansion, this is the role.

What you’ll get to do

  • Own the technical strategy and architecture for the POS Application Platform, acting as the domain CTO for everything that runs on our POS devices.
  • Build and govern the four core platform pillars across the organisation: developer experience (tools, libraries, SDKs), platform reliability (observability, uptime, quality standards), foundational frameworks (architecture, coding standards, testing and release pipelines), and squad adoption (driving uptake of platform tooling across all embedded POS engineers).
  • Define and enforce engineering standards across all POS device types and OEM manufacturers, ensuring architectural consistency and quality across a heterogeneous device fleet.
  • Functionally lead POS engineers embedded across Payments, Onboarding, VAS, Savings, and Loans squads - setting the bar for engineering quality and providing the platform layer above all of them.
  • Own POS observability end-to-end: monitoring, alerting, and incident response frameworks that ensure platform health across all devices and squads.
  • Drive the architecture for how Moniepoint supports multiple POS device types, including defining how new devices are onboarded, governed, and integrated with the platform.
  • Collaborate with OEM partners and the POS hardware team when new device types are introduced, ensuring the application layer is ready to support them from day one.
  • Build and scale the POS platform team, including hiring, mentoring, and structuring for growth as the platform expands internationally.
  • Translate platform decisions into business impact, working closely with Product, Payments, and Business leadership across markets.
  • Establish and continuously improve engineering processes, tooling standards, CI/CD pipelines, and developer productivity metrics across the POS engineering community.

To succeed in this role, we think you should have

  • A minimum of 10 years of hands-on software engineering experience, with at least 6 years leading engineering teams through meaningful growth phases, ideally in multi-national or large VC-backed companies.
  • Direct, hands-on experience building software that runs on Point-of-Sale terminal devices. This means engineering on the device itself — the application layer — not server-side integrations with POS systems. This is a non-negotiable requirement and candidates without it will not be considered.
  • Strong working knowledge of EMV standards (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) and experience navigating payment certification processes such as PCI DSS and P2PE. Candidates without this will not be considered.
  • Deep Android engineering expertise in Kotlin and Java. The POS application layer at Moniepoint is Android-based and there are no exceptions to this requirement.
  • Proven experience building internal engineering platforms, shared libraries, developer tooling, or foundational frameworks used by other engineering teams — not just consumer-facing feature products.
  • Experience governing or architecting across multiple POS device types from different hardware manufacturers, with an understanding of how OEM integrations and device management work at scale.
  • Experience building or maturing platform engineering functions, including establishing engineering processes, tooling strategies, and cross-squad governance structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to scale engineering teams and build the organisational layer beneath you — leaders who can grow into and around the role you are hiring into.
  • Experience at a company processing high volumes of financial transactions in a regulated environment. Fintech background is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with terminal management systems and device observability tooling is a strong advantage.
  • Backend engineering experience in Java or Spring Boot is a strong plus given the breadth of the platform and the integration surface it sits on.
  • Experience working directly with OEM vendors on hardware specification and integration is a bonus.
  • Exposure to C or C++ is a plus — one of our device variants uses C.
  • Experience at Series A or B stage startups alone is unlikely to reflect the scale and complexity required for this role.

Cultural Alignment

We assess every candidate across eight dimensions that define how great leaders operate at Moniepoint.

Some of the technologies you’ll work with

  • Android (Kotlin, Java) - primary platform for all POS application development
  • EMV payment standards and PCI/P2PE certification frameworks
  • Multiple POS device types and OEM manufacturers, including Topwise and Telpo
  • Terminal management systems and device observability tooling
  • Java, Spring Boot — backend services and integration layer
  • Docker and Kubernetes
  • PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch
  • Microservices architecture on AWS

What we can offer you

  • Culture - We put our people first and prioritise the well-being of every team member. We have built a company where all opinions carry weight and where all voices are heard. We value and respect each other and always look out for one another. Above all, we are human.
  • Learning - We have a learning and development-focused environment with an emphasis on knowledge sharing, training, and regular internal technical talks.
  • Compensation - You will receive an attractive salary, pension, health insurance, annual bonus, plus other benefits.

What to expect in the hiring process

  • Stage 1: A preliminary phone call with one of our recruiters.
  • Stage 2: Technical Round focused on core technical strengths and depth in Android/Kotlin
  • Stage 3: System Design - You will be asked to solve complex system design problems to assess your technical and architectural skills, with a particular focus on POS and mobile platform architecture and payment systems.
  • Stage 4: Technical and Architectural Leadership - An interview with one Head of Engineering focused on leadership skills and attributes.
  • Stage 5: CTO Interview - A conversation with our CTO assessing first-principles thinking, problem-solving under ambiguity, clarity of thought, and cultural alignment.

Engineer Senior Forward Deployed Engineer at Cloudflare

Senior engineer embedded with strategic customers to build and deploy production solutions using Cloudflare's platform while influencing product direction.

Senior Onsite Posted 9 days ago RemoteFirstJobs Product

Available Locations

  • San Francisco, US

About the Role

Cloudflare’s Senior Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) operate at the intersection of product engineering and customer impact.

As an FDE, you will be embedded within one of Cloudflare’s most strategic global customers, working side-by-side with their engineering teams to build and deploy solutions using Cloudflare’s platform. Unlike traditional Solutions Architects or consultants, you will write production code, shape technical architecture, and directly influence how Cloudflare products are used at massive scale.

You will operate as a technical extension of both organizations - helping the customer ship faster while surfacing real-world product insights back to Cloudflare engineering.

Responsibilities

This role is ideal for engineers who want to:

  • Stay deeply technical
  • Work on real production systems
  • Influence product direction

Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Proven Engineering Pedigree: 7+ years of professional software engineering experience. You are a builder at heart, with a track record of delivering production-grade systems, not just advising on them.
  • Languages: You are experienced with modern languages like TypeScript, Rust, Golang.
  • Production Ownership & Operational Maturity: You have owned mission-critical services with real-world users. You understand the gravity of on-call rotations, the urgency of incident response, and the architectural rigor required to maintain “five nines” uptime.
  • Active Practitioner: You are currently in the IDE. You have a “ship-first” mentality and maintain a high velocity, staying current with modern frameworks, languages, and deployment patterns.
  • Full-Stack Architectural Depth: Broad technical fluency across the entire stack—from frontend performance and backend logic to database optimization and distributed infrastructure.
  • AI-Native Development: You have integrated AI-augmented workflows (e.g., Windsurf, OpenCode) into your daily development cycle to accelerate prototyping and delivery.
  • Systems Design & Strategic Thinking: Ability to decompose complex business requirements into scalable, resilient technical architectures. You can visualize the “big picture” without losing sight of the implementation details.
  • Cloud Ecosystem Fluency: Deep experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including an understanding of serverless, networking, and security primitives.
  • High Agency & Navigating Ambiguity: You are a self-starter who thrives in “zero-to-one” environments. You don’t wait for a ticket; you identify the problem and own the solution from end-to-end.
  • Executive Presence: Comfortable engaging in high-stakes technical and strategic discussions with VP-level stakeholders, with the ability to translate complex engineering trade-offs into business impact.

Bonus Points

  • Direct experience building on Cloudflare Workers, or the broader Cloudflare Developer Platform.
  • Previous experience at a fast-paced startup or in a customer-facing engineering role where you operated directly within a partner’s codebase.

What Makes Cloudflare Special?

We’re not just a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company. We’re a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company with a soul. Fundamental to our mission to help build a better Internet is protecting the free and open Internet.

Project Galileo: Since 2014, we’ve equipped more than 2,400 journalism and civil society organizations in 111 countries with powerful tools to defend themselves against attacks that would otherwise censor their work, technology already used by Cloudflare’s enterprise customers–at no cost.

Athenian Project: In 2017, we created the Athenian Project to ensure that state and local governments have the highest level of protection and reliability for free, so that their constituents have access to election information and voter registration. Since the project, we’ve provided services to more than 425 local government election websites in 33 states.

1.1.1.1: We released1.1.1.1 to help fix the foundation of the Internet by building a faster, more secure and privacy-centric public DNS resolver. This is available publicly for everyone to use - it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released. Here’s the deal - we don’t store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers.
